An analog multi-effects unit consisting of 5 effects pedals, housed in a Busy Board-inspired enclosure. The goal of the piece is to inspire play and curiosity when a user changes a parameter and receives feedback in the form of sonic changes.

Project Ethos Derived from Japanoise by David Novak

Several artists interviewed in Japanoise discussed that they went out of their way to know as little as possible about their equipment. The less they understand about their circuits, the more the circuits will surprise them. This became the philosophical backbone of my project. The less I know about what the controls do, the more they will surprise me and the more curious I will get to keep exploring.

Process Summary

• Research effects pedals to narrow down circuit choices
• Pedals picked: fuzz, distortion, chorus, multiband delay
• Methodology: PCBs populated for distortion, chorus and delay; fuzz pedal built on solderable breadboard
• Most of February was spent understanding the circuits—research listed below
• Components were ordered in phases—passive components, active components, missed components
• Initial plan for enclosure was a pedalboard format. In March, the plan shifted to a Busy Board style box
• Passive components were soldered for all PCB pedals simultaneously. This took almost 2 months
• In April, the reverb PCB was damaged and after multiple attempts to fix it, was removed from the project
• Late March-early April: active components were installed
